There is no single answer for “Bengaluru tap water” because there is no single Bengaluru tap water. BWSSB is treated centrally; borewell and tanker water are not treated before they reach you unless you treat them. Even treated Cauvery water can pick up contamination in old pipelines or in poorly maintained underground and overhead tanks — so tank hygiene matters as much as the source.

What the BIS drinking-water standard says
India's drinking-water specification is BIS IS 10500. For each parameter it sets an acceptable limit (desirable for regular drinking) and a higher permissiblelimit (tolerable only “in the absence of an alternate source”). The three parameters that matter most for Bengaluru:
- Total dissolved solids (TDS): acceptable 500 mg/L, permissible 2000 mg/L.
- Total hardness (as CaCO₃): acceptable 200 mg/L, permissible 600 mg/L.
- Iron: acceptable 0.3 mg/L (a single limit, not a permissible relaxation).

Bengaluru's common issue: hardness
Much of Bengaluru sits on hard-rock terrain, and groundwater moving through that rock dissolves calcium and magnesium along the way. So many borewells run hard— you notice it as white scale on taps, geysers and kettles, soap that won't lather, and a faintly chalky taste. Hardness above the BIS acceptable level of 200 mg/L is common in borewell-fed pockets.
Crucially, hardness is mostly a treatment and appliance question, not always a safety one. Hard water shortens the life of geysers and washing machines and leaves scale, but it is not, at ordinary levels, a health hazard the way bacterial contamination or high nitrate is. When tap water needs treatment — and which kind
The flags below signal that raw supply needs something before you drink it. The point is to match the treatment to the problem rather than default to the biggest purifier on the shelf:
- Bacteriological flags → UV or UF. If the risk is microbial (common where treated water sits in dirty tanks, or with untested borewell/tanker water), ultraviolet or ultrafiltration handles pathogens without stripping minerals.
- High TDS / brackish taste → RO. Reverse osmosis removes dissolved salts and is the usual answer when TDS is high — but it is overkill for already-low-TDS Cauvery water.
- Hardness (scale, poor lather) → softener. A softener swaps hardness ions; it does not disinfect or lower TDS, so it solves scale, not salinity or germs.
- Iron above 0.3 mg/L → iron removal / oxidation. Shows up as reddish-brown staining and a metallic taste; needs a dedicated stage, not a standard purifier.

Is BWSSB Cauvery tap water safe to drink without a purifier?
BWSSB treats Cauvery water at its plants before distribution, so at the source it is intended to meet drinking-water norms. In practice, quality at your tap also depends on the pipeline, your building's underground and overhead tanks, and how often those tanks are cleaned — contamination between the treatment plant and your glass is the usual risk, not the treated water itself. Many Cauvery-supplied homes drink it after simple UV or UF treatment rather than RO. The only way to be sure for your home is a test.
Is Bangalore borewell water safe to drink?
It varies enormously borehole to borehole. Bengaluru borewell (groundwater) water is frequently hard and can run high on TDS, and in some pockets carries elevated nitrate or other parameters. Hardness itself is mostly a taste-and-scaling issue rather than a health one, but the safety parameters TDS can't see — nitrate, bacteria, specific salts — are what determine whether it is drinkable.
