How to test your water quality at home (Bengaluru & Chennai)

You can learn a lot about your water in ten minutes with a cheap meter and a test strip — and there's a hard limit to what those tools can tell you. This guide walks the practical middle path: what to check yourself, when a lab test is the only honest answer, and how to read the numbers against India's official drinking-water standard.

What to test for — and what each number means

Water quality isn't one number. A few parameters carry most of the practical decisions for an Indian home:

  • TDS (total dissolved solids):the combined dissolved minerals and salts, in mg/L. High TDS makes water taste salty or bitter; very low TDS tastes flat. It's a quantity, not a safety verdict.
  • Hardness: calcium and magnesium (as CaCO3). Hard water scales taps and geysers, spots utensils and kills soap lather. This is the classic Bengaluru borewell complaint and the main input to the RO-vs-softener decision.
  • pH: how acidic or alkaline the water is. BIS wants it between 6.5 and 8.5. Off-range pH corrodes plumbing and affects taste.
  • Bacteria: total coliform and E. coli. The single most important safety parameter, and one no home gadget can read — it needs a lab.
  • Iron, nitrate and heavy metals: iron stains and discolours; nitrate (common where groundwater meets sewage or fertiliser run-off) is a health concern, especially for infants; arsenic and lead matter at tiny concentrations. All lab territory.

Step-by-step: testing your water

    Check TDS with a digital meter

    Dip a calibrated TDS meter in a glass of your drinking water and read the value in ppm (mg/L). This is your fastest signal for total dissolved solids. Note it, then repeat at the tap and at your RO outlet if you have one, so you can compare raw versus treated water.

    Test hardness with a strip

    Dip a total-hardness test strip and match the colour to the chart. Hardness (calcium and magnesium, reported as CaCO3) is what causes scale on taps, white residue on utensils and low soap lather — very common in Bengaluru borewell supply.

    Do a visual and smell check

    Fill a clear glass and look for cloudiness, particles or a yellow/brown tint (often iron). Smell for a rotten-egg odour (hydrogen sulphide) or a strong chlorine smell. These are cheap sensory clues, not measurements — but they tell you what to ask the lab to test for.

    Send a sample to a NABL-accredited lab

    For anything a meter cannot see — bacteria (total coliform, E. coli), heavy metals (arsenic, lead), nitrate, fluoride and iron — collect a clean sample per the lab's instructions and submit it to a NABL-accredited water-testing laboratory for a full potability panel against IS 10500.

    Interpret your results against BIS IS 10500

    Compare each parameter to the BIS drinking-water limits (IS 10500:2012). TDS acceptable up to 500 mg/L, hardness up to 200 mg/L, pH 6.5–8.5, and coliform/E. coli that must not be detectable. Decide your next step — a softener for hardness, RO for high TDS or heavy metals, or UV/boiling for bacteria.

DIY versus lab: what a cheap meter can and can't tell you

A ₹300–₹800 TDS meter and a pack of hardness strips are genuinely useful. They tell you how mineral-heavy your water is, whether it's hard, and whether your RO unit is actually reducing TDS. What they can't do is tell you whether the water is safe to drink.

TDS is a measure of conductivity — total dissolved matter — not composition. Two glasses with an identical TDS reading can be completely different: one clean mineral water, the other carrying bacteria or a trace of a heavy metal that's dangerous well below any level that moves the meter. Bacteria, arsenic, lead, nitrate and pesticides simply don't register on a TDS meter or a hardness strip. That's why potability — the yes/no on drinking — always needs a laboratory panel. Treat DIY tools as a triage step that tells you when to spend on a lab test, not a substitute for one.

Reading your results against BIS limits

India's drinking-water standard is BIS IS 10500:2012. It gives an acceptable limit and, for most parameters, a higher permissible limit allowed only when no better source exists. The headline figures:

Bengaluru versus Chennai: the common issues

Where you live shapes what you'll likely find, because the source differs.

  • Bengaluru: the Cauvery-supplied core runs softer, but the borewell-fed peripheral belts (Whitefield, Sarjapur, electronic-city corridor) frequently run hard, with elevated TDS and, in pockets, nitrate.   • Chennai: metro supply and coastal geography bring a different profile — variable municipal supply, tanker water of unknown provenance, and salinity/TDS pressure near the coast from seawater intrusion into groundwater. Here a lab test matters specifically because tanker and borewell sources vary batch to batch.

How can I test my drinking water quality at home?

Start with three quick at-home checks: a digital TDS meter for total dissolved solids, a total-hardness test strip for calcium and magnesium, and a visual/smell check for cloudiness, colour or odour. These take minutes and cost little. For anything about safety — bacteria, heavy metals, nitrate — send a sample to a NABL-accredited lab, because home kits cannot measure those reliably.

What does a TDS meter actually measure?

A TDS meter measures the electrical conductivity of the water and converts it to an estimate of total dissolved solids in ppm (mg/L) — the combined dissolved minerals and salts. It is a good, fast indicator of how mineral-heavy your water is, and useful for tracking whether an RO unit is working. It does not identify which substances are present.

Can a TDS meter tell me if my water is safe to drink?

No. A TDS meter reports the total quantity of dissolved solids, not their composition, so it cannot detect bacteria, viruses, pesticides or many heavy metals — some of which are harmful at concentrations far below what changes a TDS reading. Low TDS is not proof of safety, and moderately high TDS is not proof of harm. Potability can only be confirmed by a laboratory test against BIS IS 10500.

Where can I get my water tested by a lab in Bengaluru or Chennai?

Use a NABL-accredited water-testing laboratory. NABL (the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) publishes its list of accredited labs at nabl-india.org, searchable by city and test scope. Both Bengaluru and Chennai have multiple accredited private and institutional labs that run full drinking-water panels against IS 10500. Ask for the potability/IS 10500 panel specifically.

Which water quality parameters should I check?

For a home supply, cover TDS, total hardness and pH (quick at-home checks), plus a lab panel for bacteria (total coliform and E. coli), nitrate, fluoride, iron and heavy metals such as arsenic and lead. Which of these matter most depends on your source: borewell water tends to be hard and higher in TDS, nitrate and sometimes fluoride, while treated municipal supply is more about residual chlorine and pipe-borne contamination.

How often should I test my home water?

A full lab test once a year is a sensible baseline for most homes, and after any change — a new borewell, a monsoon, plumbing work, or a move. If you rely on a borewell, test more often, since groundwater quality shifts seasonally. TDS and hardness you can spot-check yourself any time with a meter and strips.
