Why Bengaluru water is hard — and what actually fixes it
If your taps scale up white, your geyser dies young, and your hair feels rough after every shower, you are almost certainly on hard water. In Bengaluru, that is the rule, not the exception.
What “hard water” means
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. Measured as total hardness (mg/L as CaCO₃), water below 60 is soft, 60–120 is moderately hard, 120–180 is hard, and above 180 is very hard. Bengaluru's borewell groundwater routinely sits in the hard to very hard range, with TDS often above 500 mg/L.
Why Bengaluru's water is hard
The city runs on two very different supplies. The older core gets treated Cauvery river water — relatively soft to moderately hard. The peripheral zones and IT corridor — Whitefield, Sarjapur Road, Electronic City, Bellandur and the outer belts — depend heavily on borewells. Groundwater drawn from Bengaluru's hard-rock aquifers picks up calcium and magnesium, so it comes out hard to very hard. Cauvery Stage-V is extending pipes outward, but coverage is patchy, and many layouts are still on 100% borewell or tanker supply.
Hard water is not the same as contamination
These are two different problems and they have two different fixes. Hardness is dissolved minerals — it scales and roughens, and it is removed by water softening or reverse osmosis. Contaminationis microbial or sediment ingress — worst in the monsoon and with tanker-fed supply — and it is removed by sediment filtration plus disinfection (UV or chlorination). A single “filtration” pitch that claims to solve both should make you suspicious.
The honest fix for an apartment: measure first
For an apartment complex, the smart move is source-level — treat the water where it enters the building, before it reaches individual flats. But before any committee spends on softening or filtration, get the building's real numbers. Water-quality monitoring puts sensors at the inlet and reports live hardness, TDS and turbidity. You cannot fix what you have not measured — and the right treatment depends entirely on what the numbers say.
Find the typical hardness for your area and an indicative contamination risk in two minutes.
