How to recharge a borewell with rainwater in Bengaluru

Bengaluru's water tables have been falling for years, and borewells across the city yield less than they used to. Borewell recharge is the direct answer: instead of storing rooftop rain in a tank, you filter it and put it back into the ground near your borewell, topping up the aquifer you draw from. Recharge vs storage — two different jobs

Rainwater harvesting splits into two goals, and borewell recharge is squarely the second one.

  • Storage captures rooftop rain in a tank so you can use it — flushing, gardening, washing, or (with treatment) more. The endpoint is a tank you draw from.
  • Recharge filters the runoff and routes it into a pit, trench or well — or into the borewell casing — so it percolates into the aquifer rather than sitting in a tank. The endpoint is the ground itself.

A recharge system therefore routes rooftop and surface runoff toward the aquifer near a borewell, or via a recharge pit or well, instead of into storage. Setting up a borewell recharge system: step by step

  1. 1Estimate your catchment

    Measure the plan (footprint) area of your roof and any paved surface that drains toward the recharge point, then multiply roof area (m²) × annual rainfall (mm) × a runoff coefficient of about 0.8 for a hard roof. Bengaluru gets roughly 970 mm a year, so even a 100 m² roof can send tens of thousands of litres into the ground each monsoon — enough to size the recharge structure sensibly rather than guessing.

  2. 2Build a desilting / filter chamber

    Route the collected runoff into a small settling chamber first, so silt, leaves and grit drop out and can be cleaned before they ever reach the aquifer. A simple masonry desilting pit with a gravel-and-sand filter bed is the standard front end; it is what keeps a recharge system from clogging in its first monsoon.

  3. 3Connect to a recharge pit, trench, or the borewell casing

    From the filter, lead the water to the recharge structure. That can be an open recharge pit or percolation trench near the borewell, or — for a direct borewell recharge — a pipe into the borewell casing through a dedicated filter unit. Direct-to-casing designs recharge fastest but are the least forgiving of poor filtration, so they demand extra care.

  4. 4Add a first-flush diverter

    Fit a first-flush diverter upstream so the dirtiest initial runoff — carrying roof dust, bird droppings and the first wash of accumulated grime — is discarded before the rest flows to the filter and into the ground. Diverting roughly the first 1–2 mm of rainfall (about 1–2 litres per m² of roof) is the single cheapest thing you can do to protect groundwater quality.

  5. 5Keep the recharge structure away from contamination sources

    Site the recharge pit or well well clear of septic tanks, soak pits, sewer lines, garbage and chemical storage. Because you are putting water directly into the aquifer you and your neighbours drink from, separation distance and a clean catchment matter far more here than they do for a storage tank.

  6. 6Engage a qualified RWH contractor for borewell-connected designs

    Open recharge pits are within reach of a careful homeowner, but anything that injects water into a live borewell casing should be designed and built by an experienced rainwater-harvesting contractor. They will size the filter to your yield, protect the casing, and make sure the structure percolates instead of flooding.

BWSSB rules — and why recharge pays

In Bengaluru, rainwater harvesting is a legal requirement, and recharge is one of the accepted ways to comply.

Bengaluru — BWSSB

Mandatory since 2009. Required for new buildings on plots of 30×40 ft (1,200 sq ft) or larger, and existing buildings on plots of 60×40 ft (2,400 sq ft) or larger. The system can be storage, recharge, or a mix. Non-compliance triggers an escalating surcharge on your water and sanitary charges — reported at around 25% for the first three months and rising to 50% thereafter for domestic consumers. Beyond the penalty, recharge directly addresses the reason the rule exists: a falling water table that recharge helps to slow.

Water-quality caution

Recharge puts water directly into the aquifer that your borewell — and your neighbours' borewells — draw from, so quality discipline matters more here than for a storage tank. Recharge water should always be filtered: never inject untreated runoff into a borewell. A first-flush diverter plus a desilting and filter chamber upstream is the minimum, and direct-to-casing designs need a dedicated filter unit. Keep the catchment clean and the recharge structure well away from any contamination source.

Maintenance

A recharge system is low-effort but not no-effort — the whole point is that water keeps percolating, and silt is the enemy of percolation.

  • Desilt before the monsoon. Clean out the settling chamber and remove accumulated silt from the pit so it percolates freely when the first heavy rain arrives.
  • Check and wash the filters. Clean or replace the gravel-and-sand filter media and any cartridge filter, and clear the first-flush diverter of debris.
  • Clear gutters and downpipes. Leaves and grit in the catchment path end up in the filter; keeping the roof and gutters clean roughly halves how often the filter clogs.
  • Refresh the top layer. Periodically rake or replace the top gravel/sand layer of a recharge pit so it keeps soaking water instead of sealing over.

How does borewell recharge with rainwater work?

Instead of collecting rooftop rain in a tank, a recharge system filters the runoff and directs it into the ground near a borewell — through a recharge pit, a percolation trench, or a pipe into the borewell casing via a filter. The water percolates down through the soil and rock, topping up the aquifer that your borewell draws from. The goal is to put clean rainwater back into the groundwater rather than letting it run off into the storm drain.

Can rainwater harvesting revive a dry borewell in Bangalore?

Wells and casing connections need better filtration and professional design, because poorly filtered water goes straight toward the groundwater you drink.

Do I need to filter rainwater before recharging a borewell?

Yes — filtration is not optional for recharge. Untreated runoff carries silt, leaves and surface contaminants that can clog the structure and, worse, pollute the aquifer. Every recharge system should have a first-flush diverter and a desilting/filter chamber before the water reaches the ground, and direct borewell-casing recharge needs a dedicated filter unit. Never inject raw rooftop or surface runoff into a borewell.
