What greywater is — and what it is not
The single most important distinction in this whole topic is greywater vs blackwater. Getting it right is what makes reuse safe.
- Greywater is the wastewater from baths and showers, washbasins, and the washing machine. It carries soap, shampoo, hair, lint and a little grease, but no human waste. That relatively light load is exactly why it can be filtered and reused at home.
- Blackwater is the wastewater from toilets — it contains human waste and a high pathogen load, and needs full sewage treatment before any reuse. Home greywater systems deliberately exclude it.
- Kitchen-sink water is a grey area (literally): it carries food solids and heavy grease and is often excluded from simple home systems, or routed through extra grease separation, because it fouls filters quickly.
Keep the two streams physically separate from the plumbing stage onward. The moment greywater and blackwater mix, the combined stream must be treated as sewage — which defeats the purpose of a home recycling system.
Where recycled greywater can be used
Treated greywater is non-potable — never for drinking. Its natural home is the set of demands that do not need drinking-quality water:
- Toilet flushing — often the largest indoor use you can offset, and a good match for a dual-plumbing line to the cisterns.
- Gardening and landscape watering — the simplest starting point, since a basic filter and a diversion line are enough for most plants (avoid edible parts that are eaten raw).
- Floor and outdoor washing — driveways, courtyards, and general non-contact cleaning.
What it is not for: drinking, cooking, bathing, filling a swimming pool, or spraying as a fine mist people can inhale. When in doubt, treat greywater as strictly non-potable and keep it away from anything that touches food or the body.
Setting up a simple home greywater system
A home system is a short, logical chain from drain to reuse. These six steps are the standard order; the difficulty is almost entirely in the first and last, which is why most homeowners bring in help.
1Separate greywater plumbing from blackwater
Identify the drains you want to reuse — baths, showers, washbasins and the washing machine — and keep their waste line physically separate from the toilet (blackwater) line. In a new build this is a plumbing-plan decision; in an existing house it means re-routing specific drain stacks, so it is the step that most needs a plumber.
2Route through a grease and lint trap
Send the collected greywater through a simple grease and lint trap first. Soap scum, hair, lint from laundry and kitchen-adjacent grease clog filters fast, so a trap you can open and clean protects everything downstream and is the cheapest maintenance win in the system.
3Filter the water
Pass the trapped water through a filter — a sand-and-media bed for a low-cost DIY approach, or a packaged treatment unit (sold as a home greywater or greywater-recycling system) for a more compact, consistent result. The filtration level you need depends on the reuse: garden watering tolerates basic filtration; toilet flushing benefits from finer treatment to limit odour and residue.
4Store treated water in a marked non-potable tank
Hold the filtered water in a dedicated tank that is clearly labelled non-potable / greywater and kept separate from any drinking-water storage. Do not store raw greywater for long — untreated, it turns septic within roughly a day, so size storage small and cycle it quickly rather than banking it for the week.
5Reuse via a dual-plumbing line
Feed the treated water back through a separate (dual) plumbing line to its end uses — typically toilet cisterns and garden or landscape taps. Use a distinct pipe colour or clear labelling and, where fittings could be confused with potable taps, non-compatible connectors so no one accidentally cross-connects the two supplies.
6Engage a plumber or specialist for the retrofit
For anything beyond a single garden diversion — especially dual-plumbing for flushing — bring in a plumber or a greywater specialist. They handle correct fall/slope on drains, backflow prevention, overflow to the sewer when the tank is full, and compliance with local building and water-board norms.
Safety and health
Greywater recycling is safe when a few rules are respected. Most problems come from stagnation and from lines getting crossed, not from the water itself.
- Match treatment to the use. Garden watering tolerates basic grease-trap-plus-filter treatment; toilet flushing benefits from finer filtration (and sometimes light disinfection) to keep cisterns odour- and residue-free. Do not over-promise potable quality — no simple home system makes greywater safe to drink.
- Avoid stagnation. Untreated greywater turns septic and smelly within about a day. Size storage small, cycle it quickly, and plumb an overflow to the sewer so a full tank spills safely rather than sitting.
- Keep lines clearly separated and labelled. Use a distinct pipe colour, visible non-potable / greywater labels, and fittings that cannot be confused with drinking-water taps. A cross-connection between greywater and potable supply is the one serious hazard, and it is entirely preventable.
- Watch what goes down the drain. Harsh chemicals, bleach and heavy salts in the greywater can harm plants and shorten filter life — milder, low-sodium detergents keep reused water gentler on a garden.

Greywater recycling vs rainwater harvesting
These are two different water sources that work best together, not substitutes for each other:
- Rainwater harvesting captures rain off your roof. It is seasonal — abundant in the monsoon, scarce outside it — but relatively clean at source and, in Bengaluru and Chennai, often legally mandated.
- Greywater recycling reuses water you have already used once indoors. It is available all year and independent of rainfall, but always needs filtration before reuse.

Cost bands and maintenance
Costs vary widely with how ambitious the reuse is. Treat these as starting-point ranges, not quotes — a site visit is what turns them into a real number.
- Simple garden diversion (grease trap + basic filter + a diversion line to the garden): the low end, often in the region of a few thousand rupees for a DIY-leaning setup.
- Packaged home treatment unit with a marked storage tank: a mid band, into the low tens of thousands of rupees depending on capacity and brand.
- Full dual-plumbing retrofit for flushing (separating drains, running a second supply line, backflow and overflow work): the top of the range, since it is as much a plumbing project as an equipment purchase.
Maintenance is modest but non-optional: clean the grease/lint trap regularly, wash or replace filter media on schedule, and periodically check the storage tank and overflow for silt and odour. A neglected greywater system is the main way the idea gets a bad name — the water is only as safe as the last time the filter was serviced.
Regulations — check before a major retrofit
Greywater reuse for a home is generally encouraged in India, but the specifics — how far you can go, and what you must not connect — are set locally by building bye-laws and the city water board. Confirm the current position for your address before any major retrofit, especially one that adds a second plumbing line.
Bengaluru — BWSSB / BBMP
Bengaluru already mandates rainwater harvesting for qualifying plots and encourages on-site water reuse; larger buildings and apartment complexes are the ones most likely to face explicit greywater or wastewater-reuse conditions.
