What goes into a per-watt price
Most residential rooftop systems in India today land between ₹55 and ₹85 per watt installed. The spread is real and breaks down roughly like this:
- Modules (panels): 40–50% of the installed cost. Tier-1 brands cost more but warranty is 25–30 years.
- Inverter: 10–15%. String vs micro-inverter is the biggest sub-decision; micro-inverters cost more but recover shaded-roof yield.
- Balance-of-system (BoS): 10–15%. Cables, connectors, breakers, surge protection, conduit, MC4s, mounting ironwork.
- Structure + mounting: 5–10%. Roof-type dependent — RCC vs Mangalore-tile vs metal-sheet has different hardware.
- Labour + commissioning: 10–15%. Includes DISCOM net-metering coordination + PM Surya Ghar paperwork.
- Installer margin: 5–15%. Larger national brands have higher overhead; local EPCs run leaner.
Why the installed band is wide
- State + DISCOM scheme cost. Net-metering application fees and inspection charges vary by DISCOM.
- Site complexity.Single-story RCC roof at ground level << multi-floor walk-up at the same address.
- Distance + logistics. Tier-2 / Tier-3 cities pick up freight + per-diem costs.
- Brand tier of components. Tier-1 module + Tier-1 inverter installations run 15–25% higher than blended Tier-1.5 builds — both are perfectly safe; the warranty math is different.
Methodology
RainbowHome's installed-per-watt band is the residential blended median across five states (KA, MH, TN, KL, AP), refreshed quarterly from a mix of:
- Published per-kW prices from Tata Power Solaroof, SolarSquare, Loom Solar
- MNRE-empanelled installer quotations submitted through RainbowHome
- Public IndiaMART listings (lower-bound trade pricing)
- Panel-brand published list prices, cross-referenced with distributor channels
We do not include outliers above the 90th percentile. The band is meant to bracket what a fair-quality installation should cost — not the cheapest possible price or the most premium build.
We refresh quarterly. Last full refresh: 2026-05-12. If you find a recent verified quote outside this band, email us — we'll update the seed.
