How to clean and maintain home solar panels in Bengaluru and Chennai
Rooftop solar is close to a fit-and-forget system — no moving parts, no fuel, decades of warranty. But “low maintenance” is not “no maintenance”. Dust and bird droppings quietly cut how much power your array makes, and a few simple checks catch faults before they cost you a season of generation. Why cleaning matters
A solar module makes power by letting light reach its cells. Anything that sits on the glass — a film of road dust, pollen, construction grit, or a smear of pollution — blocks some of that light and drops your output. In the dry pre-monsoon months, when Bengaluru and Chennai get long dusty spells with little rain, that film builds up fast. Bird droppings and fallen leaves are worse than dust: they can shade an entire cell or string, and a single shaded cell drags down the panels wired with it.
How much you lose depends on how dirty the array gets and how long it stays that way. Independent studies and installer field data generally put soiling losses somewhere from a few percent up into the low double digits when panels are neglected through a dry season — enough to notice on your bill, not enough to panic over. Monsoon rain does clean panels to a degree, but it often dries into a fine residue or leaves streaks around the frame, so an occasional rinse still helps. The goal is not spotless glass; it is keeping soiling from silently eroding your generation.
Step-by-step: how to clean panels safely
For a low, easily reached roof you can do routine cleaning yourself. Four rules keep it safe for both you and the array:
1Clean early morning or late evening, when panels are cool
Never clean panels in the middle of a hot day. Splashing cool water on hot glass can thermally stress the module, and midday work on a live roof is hotter and more dangerous for you. Pick early morning or after sunset, when the glass is cool and generation is low anyway.
2Use plain water and a soft brush or squeegee — no detergents, no hard jets
For ordinary dust, plain water and a soft-bristle brush, sponge or squeegee on an extension pole is enough. Skip household detergents, soap and abrasive pads — residues can streak the glass and some chemicals attack the anti-reflective coating or the module's edge sealant. Do not use a high-pressure jet: pressure washers can force water past the frame seals and crack cells.
3Never walk on the modules
Solar glass is tough but not made to be stood on. Foot pressure causes micro-cracks in the cells that you cannot see but that quietly cut output for years. Clean from the roof edge, a ladder or walkways with a long-handled tool, and keep your weight off the panels and their frames.
4For high, steep or slippery roofs, hire a professional
If your roof is multi-storey, steeply pitched, tiled and slippery, or the array is hard to reach safely, do not improvise. Book a professional cleaning or fold it into an annual maintenance contract. A fall is a far bigger cost than a slightly dusty panel.
How often — a seasonal cadence
There is no universal schedule; frequency follows dust and rainfall, so treat these as starting-point ranges and adjust to what your generation log tells you:
- Dry, dusty months (roughly Jan–May): a light water rinse about every 2–4 weeks, more often near construction sites, unpaved roads or heavy tree cover.
- Monsoon (roughly Jun–Oct): rain does most of the work — clean far less often, mainly to clear residue, leaves or droppings that rain leaves behind.
- General baseline: a more thorough clean every 1–3 months across the year suits most homes in Bengaluru and Chennai.
- Spot cleaning any time: deal with a bird dropping or fallen branch promptly rather than waiting for the next scheduled clean, because localised shading hurts more than an even layer of dust.
Beyond cleaning — periodic checks
Cleaning is the visible half of maintenance. A short seasonal inspection catches the faults that actually take systems offline:
- Inverter display / app: glance at it regularly. A red or fault light, an error code, or long stretches of zero output on a sunny day all point to a problem worth a service call.
- Wiring and connectors: look for chewed cables (rodents and monkeys are common culprits), loose or discoloured DC connectors, and conduit that has come loose in the wind.
- Mounting and bolts: the structure carries wind load year-round. Check for rust, and that clamps and bolts holding the panels and frame are still tight, especially after storms.
- Generation logs: keep an eye on daily and monthly output against what a clear day should produce. A slow decline is your earliest warning of soiling, a failing string, or an inverter that is throttling.
Monitoring your output — spotting underperformance
The simplest health check is comparing what your system makes with what it should make. Most inverters and their companion apps log daily kWh; a rough rule of thumb for a well-sited system in Karnataka or Tamil Nadu is on the order of 4–5 units per kW per day averaged over the year, lower in cloudy monsoon weeks and higher on clear winter days. Note your typical clear-day figure once, then watch for drift.
If output falls noticeably below your own baseline for the season and the sky is clear, work down the list: dirty panels first (clean and re-check), then new shading (a grown tree, a neighbour’s tank or wall), then an inverter fault or a dead string. If a clean and a visual check do not restore it, call your installer. What an AMC covers — and warranty implications of DIY cleaning
Many installers offer an annual maintenance contract (AMC). A typical one bundles a set number of cleaning visits, an inverter and wiring inspection, hardware tightening, and a generation review. It is most worth it when your roof is high or awkward to reach safely. Before signing, ask an installer:
- How many cleaning and inspection visits per year, and when?
- Are inverter faults, connector replacement and minor parts included, or billed separately?
- What is the response time if the system stops generating mid-month?
- Does the contract include a written generation report you can check against your own logs?
On warranties: routine cleaning with plain water and a soft tool is normal owner maintenance and generally does not void a module warranty. What can void it is damage from misuse — pressure washing, abrasive pads, harsh chemicals, or cracks from walking on the glass. Keep it gentle, and keep your installer’s paperwork. Safety and DISCOM notes
- Do not open the inverter or touch DC wiring. Solar arrays produce high-voltage DC whenever there is light — there is no “off” switch on the panels themselves. Internal electrical work is for a qualified technician, not a homeowner.
- Grid-tied systems have anti-islanding protection. A standard on-grid inverter is designed to shut down and stop exporting when the grid goes down, so it does not backfeed a line that a DISCOM lineman may be working on. Do not defeat or bypass this safety feature.
- Water and electricity: keep spray away from the inverter, junction boxes and any exposed wiring; clean only the module glass and frame.
- Roof safety first: use stable footing, avoid wet or steep surfaces, and when in doubt, hire a professional.
